Good morning, Scoopers!

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, we pause to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving in our Armed Forces.

The freedoms we enjoy came at a great cost, and we are forever grateful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

🛹 Bennett’s Creek Skate Park Is Getting Bigger

Photo Via: Suffolk Parks & Recreation

The News: Suffolk Parks & Recreation has started expanding the skate park at Bennett’s Creek Park. The project adds 951 square feet, bringing the total skating area to 3,951 square feet.

Why It Matters: The upgrade adds new features like a Slappy Spine, two Quarter Pipes, two Grind Ledges, and a Radius Ledge, giving skaters more room and more options for different skill levels.

👉 The Move: The skate park is temporarily closed through May 31. During the closure, skaters can use Lake Meade Skate Park at 201 Holly Lawn Parkway. For details, call Suffolk Parks & Recreation at 757-514-4920.

The News: The Hampton Roads St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway has sold out, raising $1.6 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The Dream Home is located in Suffolk’s River Estates at Hillpoint Farm.

Why It Matters: This is a big community win with a local connection. The money helps support St. Jude’s mission, where families never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food.

👉 The Move: The giveaway drawing is set for July 8 on WAVY. Open house tours run June 13–28 on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.

✍️ Hillpoint Student Wins PBS Kids Writing Honor

The News: Hillpoint Elementary student Emily Hatton earned second place in her grade level in the WHRO PBS Kids Writers Contest. Her story, The Tooth Fairy Who Never Took My Tooth, was selected for its creativity and imagination.

Why It Matters: This is a proud moment for Hillpoint Elementary and Suffolk Public Schools. It shows young students building confidence, writing skills, and creativity early.

👉 The Move: Give Emily a big round of applause. Suffolk’s next great storyteller might already be on the Hillpoint News Crew.
