The News: Suffolk’s State of the City address highlighted several major projects, from a new Downtown Library and more parks to local business growth. TowneBank is expanding its Harbour View campus with a new 85,000-square-foot building, and AMADAS Industries is investing more than $10 million into upgrades at its Holland Road location.

Why It Matters: Suffolk is growing fast, and city leaders are trying to make sure daily life keeps up. That means better places to gather, more healthcare access, and local companies choosing to grow right here at home.

The News: Middle and high school students took part in Suffolk Public Schools’ annual Sea, Land & Air Challenge at Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School. Students designed and operated unmanned vehicles to complete missions tied to military, first responder, and environmental safety scenarios.

Why It Matters: This was more than a classroom project. Students used engineering, robotics, teamwork, and problem-solving skills on challenges that connect to real-world careers.

👉 The Move: Give these future engineers their credit. Suffolk students are not just learning STEM — they are putting it to work.

The News: Take 5 Oil Change has opened its first Suffolk location at 1975 N. Main St. The shop has three service bays, and customers can stay in their car while getting an oil change in about 10 minutes. No appointment needed.

Why It Matters: It gives Suffolk drivers another quick-service option without having to leave town. The new location also adds jobs and brings another national brand to North Main Street.

👉 The Deal: Take 5 is offering $25 off any oil change for a limited time. Active-duty military and veterans can also get a 25% year-round discount at participating locations.
