🎓 Suffolk Students Get a New Career Coach in Their Corner

Photo Via: WHRO Public Media
The News: Suffolk Public Schools has partnered with Opportunity Scholars, along with Isle of Wight County and Portsmouth schools. The nonprofit helps young adults find career paths through coaching, financial support, and job-readiness training.
Why It Matters: The program is open to low- and middle-income young adults ages 16–29. Coaches help students explore careers, find affordable education, apply for grants and scholarships, and connect with employers in high-demand fields.
👉 The Move: Opportunity Scholars has already added 61 Hampton Roads students in the past six months. Know a young person who needs more than a diploma — they need a plan? Learn more at opportunityscholars.org.
🎶 CFCMS Music Department Earns Virginia’s Highest Honor

Photo Via: Suffolk VA Public Schools
The News: Colonel Fred Cherry Middle School’s Music Department was honored at the 2026 Blue Ribbon Gala for excellence in band, orchestra, and chorus. The Virginia Music Education Association Blue Ribbon Award is the highest honor a school music program can receive in Virginia.
Why It Matters: This award reflects the hard work of students, teachers, and families across all three music programs. Earning the state’s top music honor is a major achievement for CFCMS and Suffolk Public Schools.
👉 The Move: Give the CFCMS music community a standing ovation. The school bearing Colonel Fred Cherry’s name is carrying forward a proud tradition of excellence.
🍎 Meet Suffolk’s Excellent Educator

The News: WAVY-TV 10 has named Northern Shores Elementary fourth-grade teacher Anneka Newman as Suffolk’s Excellent Educator for May. Newman is dually certified and previously worked as a special education teacher.
Why It Matters: Newman was inspired to teach after watching her younger sister struggle in school without the support she needed. That experience shaped her goal: making sure every child feels seen, supported, and included.
👉 The Move: Give Ms. Newman her flowers. After teaching in San Diego, Japan, Maryland, and now Suffolk, she is still helping students feel like they belong.
