🤖 Suffolk Is Ending Curbside Recycling

The News: Suffolk is ending curbside recycling next month and moving to a new AI-powered waste sorting system through SPSA. Household trash will go to a transfer facility, then to AMP’s sorting facility, where recyclables and organic materials are pulled out before the rest heads to the landfill.
Why It Matters: The new system uses cameras and AI technology to separate recyclable items from the trash stream automatically. The goal is to boost recycling and help extend the life of the Suffolk landfill.
👉 The Move: Watch for city updates on what this means for weekly pickup. The recycling bin may be going away, but the sorting is still happening.
📅 Suffolk’s Juneteenth Holiday Schedule

The News: City of Suffolk offices will be closed Friday, June 19 for Juneteenth and reopen Monday, June 22 at 8:30 a.m.
Why It Matters: Trash and recycling will run on schedule, and Suffolk Transit will operate normally with free fares all day. Recreation centers, the Suffolk Art Gallery, Railroad Museum, and both city libraries will be closed.
👉 The Move: Set trash and recycling out by 7 a.m., and double-check hours before heading to city facilities. Major parks will stay open, but no attendants will be on duty. Happy Juneteenth, Suffolk!
🚫 Suffolk Prosecutor Cracks Down on Illegal Dumping

The News: Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Narendra Pleas is leading an effort to prosecute illegal dumping and other environmental crimes across the city. Her office has handled about two dozen cases since launching the initiative.
Why It Matters: Suffolk’s size makes illegal dumping hard to catch, especially in rural and wooded areas. But dumped mattresses, furniture, and trash hurt neighborhoods, property values, and the environment.
👉 The Move: See illegal dumping in Suffolk? Report it. Keeping the city clean takes all of us.
