The News: A new feasibility study says a downtown Suffolk Amtrak stop could bring in about 24,000 boardings a year. Consultants say there is enough demand to keep studying possible locations, costs, and community feedback.

Why It Matters: Right now, Suffolk residents have to drive to Norfolk to catch a westbound Amtrak train. A downtown stop could make travel easier and bring more activity to the heart of the city.

The News: Suffolk Fire & Rescue has added its second Pierce 3,000-gallon pumper tanker. The new truck can carry 3,000 gallons of water, pump 1,500 gallons per minute, and comes with modern firefighting technology.

Why It Matters: About half of Suffolk’s 430-square-mile coverage area does not have fire hydrants. That means rural neighborhoods depend on trucks like this to bring water directly to the scene.

👉 The Move: This new tanker gives Suffolk Fire & Rescue more water capacity and stronger support during emergencies. Big thanks to the crews who keep showing up for Suffolk every day.

The News: Suffolk City Council unanimously rejected a proposed solar facility on Old Myrtle Road after strong opposition from nearby residents. Neighbors packed City Hall and raised concerns about noise, flooding, and the project changing the rural feel of the area.

Why It Matters: This was a big moment for Old Myrtle Road residents who showed up and spoke out. The developer offered mitigation plans, but council ultimately sided with the community.

👉 The Move: This is local government in action. Residents spoke, council listened, and the project did not move forward.

Suffolk Parks & Recreation’s TGIF Summer Concert Series kicks off Friday, June 12 at Downtown Festival Park, 215 W. Washington St.

Suffolk Public Schools is inviting the community to the grand opening and ribbon cutting for the new John F. Kennedy Middle School on Thursday, July 30, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Families can join school and city leaders for the celebration and take guided tours of the brand-new building. The old JFK Middle School was auctioned off earlier this summer ahead of demolition, so this new school marks a fresh chapter for students and the community.

The 48th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest returns to Suffolk Executive Airport from October 8 through 11 with country headliner Chris Cagle, a brand-new drone show, a live butterfly walk-through exhibit, and more. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Generations, One Picture Perfect Memory at a Time!” The festival is one of Suffolk’s biggest annual events, and this year’s new drone show and butterfly exhibit give families even more reasons to mark the calendar.

The Suffolk Virginia Sheriff’s Office is hosting a school supply drive on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 9 a.m. at Walmart on N. Main Street. Stop by during the 5-hour event to donate backpacks, notebooks, crayons, pencils, and other supplies for students in need. It’s also Tax-Free Weekend, so it’s a great time to help local kids start the school year ready.

Pizza is a 3-year-old Black Mouth Cur mix with the perfect recipe for fun. He’s neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to go home today. Pizza loves adventure, exploring, and spending time with his people, whether it’s a walk around the neighborhood or a day in the yard.
