The News: Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center is using AI-enabled patient safety sensors, digital whiteboards, virtual nursing, and other smart-room technology throughout its inpatient rooms. The system can alert nurses when a patient at risk of falling begins moving or appears likely to get out of bed, while digital whiteboards automatically display updated care plans, medications, and tests.

Why It Matters: Harbour View is Bon Secours Mercy Health’s first smart hospital, designed to use technology to reduce safety risks and give nurses more time with patients. The hospital also offers the latest da Vinci 5 robotic-assisted surgical system.

👉 The Move: Harbour View has recorded more than 35,000 patient visits since opening in May 2025, giving Suffolk residents access to increasingly advanced hospital care close to home.

The News: Sentara Obici Hospital has opened a new Butterfly Room inside its Family Maternity Unit, funded by a $35,000 gift from Kennedy’s Angel Gowns. The private room includes a special cooling cradle that gives grieving families more time with their baby.

Why It Matters: The room gives families a quiet, private place to grieve, hold their baby, and make memories during an incredibly difficult time. Kennedy’s Angel Gowns was founded by Heather and Demitri Wilson after the loss of their daughter, Kennedy.

The News: Dollar Tree opened its 9,500th store at 6150 College Drive in Suffolk on Oct. 23, marking the company’s 40th anniversary. To celebrate, Dollar Tree also announced a new $40 million Dollar Tree Impact Fund through the Hampton Roads Community Foundation to support nonprofits and community projects across the U.S. and Canada. More than 100 Dollar Tree associates also teamed up with Keep Suffolk Beautiful for a community cleanup.

Why It Matters: Dollar Tree began right here in Hampton Roads 40 years ago and now operates thousands of stores across North America, making Suffolk’s selection for store number 9,500 a full-circle moment. The new Impact Fund will focus on access to essentials, economic opportunity, and cleaner, stronger communities.

The Salute to Veterans Stall Crawl is set for Sunday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Suffolk.

The event brings together three local barns for one patriotic day of horses, community, and honoring veterans. 🐴
