🛡️ Senior Citizen Academy: Now Enrolling

Got a parent or grandparent who likes to stay sharp and involved? This might be something to send their way.
The News: The Suffolk Police Department is now accepting applications for its next class of “Senior Students.”
When: Wednesdays, June 3 to August 12 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Where: Suffolk Police Headquarters at 111 Henley Place
What You’ll Learn: Self-defense, Virginia gun laws, crime scene investigation, traffic laws, and more.
The Catch: Spots are limited and the deadline to apply is May 15.

🚍 New Transit Names Are In

Suffolk just gave its new transit routes a local twist.
The News: After a city-wide “Make Your Mark” contest, Suffolk Transit announced the winning names for new regional routes launching May 4.
The Names:
🥜 Peanut Express connecting Suffolk to Windsor
⚓ Seaport Express connecting Suffolk to Portsmouth
The Why: It’s a fun way to highlight local identity while expanding connections across the region.
The Bonus: Several local residents were selected as winners and will be recognized with certificates and Suffolk goodie bags

🛠️ Suffolk Hosting Job Fair

The News: Suffolk Public Works and Public Utilities are hosting a joint job fair on April 18.
The Details:
Saturday, April 18 from 10 AM to 2 PM
Public Works Operations at 800 Carolina Road
The Jobs: Street maintenance, heavy equipment operators, utility workers, inspectors, and more.
The Why: You can apply and interview on site, plus meet staff and learn about pay, benefits, and growth opportunities.
The Catch: Walk ins are welcome, but pre registered applicants get priority.

🏡 Suffolk Farm Gets Historic Recognition

A piece of Suffolk’s past just got official recognition.
The News: The Ames Old Farm has been added to Virginia’s historic landmarks register.
The Why: The property reflects early 1800s agricultural life in the Tidewater region and shows how farming families lived and worked over generations.
The Details: The main home was built in 1815, with additions and outbuildings added over time as needs changed.
👉 The Move: If you’re into local history, this is a reminder there’s more to Suffolk than meets the eye.
