Good morning, Scoopers!

Let’s start today with a big shoutout for a Suffolk student athlete. 🏃‍♀️

Congratulations to Chiarra Parilla, a Lady Bulldog, for finishing 10th out of 85 runners at the Ham City Hustle Cross Country Invitational. That is a strong showing and a great way to represent her school.

Way to go, Chiarra! Suffolk loves seeing our young athletes shine. 🥇

🍺 Suffolk Brewers Join Native Plant Beer Project

The News: Virginia brewers are teaming up with The Nature Conservancy to create beers flavored with native plants from protected places across the state. The project includes breweries in Suffolk, with Upweller Beer and Sojourn Fermentory listed among the collaborators.

Why It Matters: The goal is to use craft beer to spotlight Virginia’s natural areas, including plants like longleaf pine, red spruce, sassafras, eel grass, bayberry, and spicebush. Each beer can also features custom artwork tied to the ecosystem it represents.

👉 The Move: Beer lovers can keep an eye out for these limited brews and learn more about the habitats behind them. It is a fun mix of local beer, conservation, and Virginia flavor.

🥜 Suffolk Peanut Project Brings Giant Peanut Sculptures to Town

The News: Suffolk is launching a public art project featuring 5-foot-tall peanut sculptures. The first sculpture was created by artist Myke Irving, who also helped with Norfolk’s mermaid statues and Chesapeake’s blue heron sculptures. Local artists will decorate future peanuts, with the goal of placing them across Suffolk’s boroughs and villages.

Why It Matters: The project is about art, local pride, and supporting parks and trails. The Suffolk Parks and Trails Alliance is leading the effort, and proceeds will help support parks, trails, and green spaces. The long-term hope is to create a Peanut Trail map that encourages people to explore Suffolk.

👉 The Move: Look for the first peanut sculpture at Taste of Suffolk and Peanut Fest, October 8-11. Artists and sponsors can contact Suffolk Parks and Trails Alliance on Facebook or email [email protected].
