⚠️ Raccoon Tests Positive for Rabies on Lake Cohoon Road

The News: The Suffolk Health Department is alerting residents after a raccoon tested positive for rabies in the 3000 block of Lake Cohoon Road. The raccoon was picked up by a concerned person driving through the area, then humanely euthanized and tested because of its symptoms. This is Suffolk’s fifth confirmed rabies case in recent months.

Why It Matters: Rabies is deadly once symptoms appear, so residents should avoid contact with wild or stray animals. Suffolk has now had rabies confirmed this year in a fox, feral cat, bat, and raccoon. Pet owners should make sure dogs and cats are up to date on rabies vaccines.

✅ Do not approach wild or stray animals
✅ Keep pets vaccinated
✅ Keep pets on your property
✅ Secure trash containers

👉 The Move: If your pet had contact with a wild animal, call Suffolk Animal Control at 757-514-7855 or the Suffolk Health Department at 757-514-4751 right away. Stay alert, Suffolk.

🚗 Downtown Streets Close Saturday for Taste of Suffolk

The News: Taste of Suffolk is this Saturday, September 12, and several downtown streets will close starting at 5 a.m. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with roads expected to reopen around 7 p.m.

Streets closing at 5 a.m.:

✅ N. Main Street between Finney Ave. and Market St., southbound closed
✅ 100 block of N. Main St. from Market St. to Washington St.
✅ South Main Street Bridge, northbound closed
✅ 100 block of Bank Street from Commerce St. to N. Main St.
✅ 100 block of E. Washington St. from Commerce St. to N. Main St.
✅ 100 block of W. Washington St. from Saratoga St. to N. Main St.

Why It Matters: Downtown will be busy, and vehicles left in designated event areas after 5 a.m. may be towed if the owner cannot be found.

👉 The Move: Check posted parking signs, plan your route, and give yourself extra time Saturday morning. Then enjoy the 20th annual Taste of Suffolk downtown.

🔥 Suffolk Fire & Rescue Opens New Burn Building

The News: Suffolk Fire & Rescue officially opened its new Class A Burn Building off Carolina Road on September 10. The first fire was ceremonially lit at 9:11 a.m., a nod to the emergency number first responders answer every day.

Why It Matters: The new facility gives Suffolk firefighters a place to train in realistic fire conditions right here at home. That means crews can sharpen their skills without having to travel elsewhere, which helps improve emergency response and protection for Suffolk residents.

👉 The Move: Congratulations to Suffolk Fire & Rescue and everyone who helped bring the project to life. Better training means a safer Suffolk.
