🖥️ Suffolk Moves Toward Temporary Data Center Ban

The News: Suffolk’s Planning Commission voted 8-0 to recommend prohibiting standalone data centers in all city zoning districts while Suffolk works out longer-term rules. The proposal defines a data center as a property primarily used to store, manage, process, or transmit digital data. Hospitals, offices, and other buildings that simply operate their own network equipment would not fall under that definition. City Council is expected to consider the measure in October.

Why It Matters: Suffolk is not alone. Virginia Beach has adopted a 12-month moratorium, while Chesapeake has restricted by-right data center development as both cities work on their own regulations. Suffolk commissioners said the pause would give the city time to decide where and under what conditions data centers may fit locally.

👉 The Move: Keep an eye on City Council in October. The Planning Commission’s recommendation is only one step. City Council has the final say.

🏛️ Chuckatuck Town Hall Set for Monday

The News: Councilwoman Shelley Butler Barlow is hosting a Chuckatuck Borough Town Hall on Monday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at Hillpoint Elementary School.

Why It Matters: Residents can hear updates from Police, Fire & Rescue, Public Works, and Economic Development and bring local questions directly to city officials.

👉 The Move: Chuckatuck residents, mark your calendar and come ready with your questions.

The News: Zoey Carpenter of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy has been crowned the 2026 Suffolk Peanut Fest Queen following the Queen’s Banquet and Fashions on Oct. 1 at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront.

Why It Matters: Princesses were nominated by their schools based on academics, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and a creative essay. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Generations — One Picture Perfect Memory at a Time.”

The 2026 Court:
👑 Zoey Carpenter, Nansemond-Suffolk Academy
