đ New Downtown Suffolk Library Gets Grand Opening Date

The News: Suffolkâs new Downtown Suffolk Library will officially open with a ribbon-cutting and community celebration on Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. The new library is located at 325 W. Washington Street in the heart of historic downtown.
Why It Matters: This new two-story library is designed to be more than a place to check out books. It will give residents a space to learn, create, gather, and connect. After the ribbon cutting, visitors can explore the building, take tours, enjoy hands-on crafts, check out makerspace demos, and take part in family-friendly activities.
đ The Move: Mark your calendar for June 27. This is a big milestone for Downtown Suffolk and a new chapter for the cityâs library system.
â°ď¸ Suffolkâs Oldest Black Cemetery Needs Help

The News: Oak Lawn Cemetery, founded in 1885, is one of Suffolkâs most important historic sites. The eight-acre cemetery is the final resting place for hundreds of Black ministers, bankers, doctors, veterans, and even a Tuskegee Airman.
Why It Matters: Over the years, parts of the cemetery have become overgrown and hard for families to reach. Family historian and volunteer Nadia Orton said some families still bring boots and lawn mowers just to visit their loved ones. This is about more than grass. It is about protecting Suffolkâs history.
đ The Move: Community members are working to bring more attention and support to Oak Lawn. City Councilman LeOtis Williams said his lawn business would cut the grass so families could find loved ones for Memorial Day. Anyone who wants to help can reach out to the Historic Oak Lawn Cemetery Foundation.
đ Suffolkâs Class of 2026 Has Left the Building

The News: Suffolk Public Schools held its 2026 graduation ceremonies on Saturday, May 30, at Chartway Arena in Norfolk. Graduates from Kingâs Fork, Nansemond River, and Lakeland walked across the stage and officially closed their K-12 chapter.
Why It Matters: Graduation weekend is Suffolk at its best. Proud parents, happy tears, big hugs, and a whole city cheering on the next generation. This yearâs class includes standout students like Kingâs Forkâs Michael Allen, who went 13 years without missing a single day, and Lakelandâs Alexis Morrison, who earned more than $4 million in scholarship offers.
đ The Move: Congratulations to every graduate, every family, and every teacher who helped get them to that stage. Suffolkâs Class of 2026 is officially on the move. đ
