The News: Suffolk native Grayson Fitzwater, a first baseman at VMI, was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the 2026 MLB Draft. He most recently played with the Peninsula Pilots this summer before hearing his name called on draft day.

Why It Matters: A Suffolk kid is getting his shot at professional baseball. Fitzwater joins a strong group of Virginia college players taking the next step toward the pros.

👉 The Move: Congratulations, Grayson! Suffolk is cheering you on all the way.

🎨 Suffolk Artist Chosen for NSA’s 2027 Art Show

The News: Award-winning Suffolk painter and calligrapher Chris Jeanguenat has been selected as the featured artist for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy’s 2027 Art Show and Sale, running January 30 through February 7, 2027, at NSA’s Main Campus.

Why It Matters: Jeanguenat has more than 35 years of painting experience and 40 years of calligraphy practice. Her work has been shown at Norfolk Botanical Garden, the Rawls Museum, and the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts. She also serves on the Suffolk Art League’s executive board and has won top awards across Hampton Roads, including Best in Show at the Stockley Gardens Arts Festival.

👉 The Move: Mark your calendar for January 30, 2027, and come support a Suffolk artist on a big local stage.

🏥 Suffolk Teens Get Hands-On Hospital Experience

The News: Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center in Suffolk is hosting Camp Scrubs, a free week-long camp for 7th through 9th graders interested in healthcare careers. Students are learning skills like suturing, starting IVs, giving ultrasounds, and watching a DaVinci surgical robot in action.

Why It Matters: Two Suffolk students were selected for the camp. William Thorne, 14, of Nansemond River High School, said it showed him how many career paths exist in medicine. Milah Gordan, 13, of Col. Fred Cherry Middle School, came in interested in forensics and left thinking about becoming an ultrasound tech.

👉 The Move: Know a middle schooler interested in healthcare? Watch for next year’s Camp Scrubs application at Bon Secours Harbour View Medical Center. Suffolk’s future doctors, nurses, and techs are already getting started.

The News: Wilroy Road will temporarily close from July 13 through July 31 for work on the HRSD Suffolk Pump Station Replacement Project. Detour signs will be posted, and access to nearby homes and businesses will be maintained when possible.

Why It Matters: This is the second phase of closures after the first round ran from June 22 through July 10. Drivers who use Wilroy Road should expect delays and plan another route.

👉 The Move: Allow extra travel time and follow the posted detour signs starting July 13. For updates, visit suffolkva.us.
