The News: Dangerous heat is hitting Suffolk as student athletes are back on the field for fall sports. Suffolk Public Schools athletic trainers are using heat-stress trackers to monitor conditions before and during practices. Coaches can adjust practices with extra water breaks, equipment changes, or schedule changes when conditions get too risky.
Why It Matters: Heat illness can turn serious fast, especially during hot September practices. The good news is that with quick action and proper care, athletes can be protected. Suffolk schools say they are watching conditions closely so students can practice, compete, and get home safely.
👉 The Move: Parents, remind your athletes to hydrate before practice, eat well, get good sleep, and speak up if they feel dizzy, weak, sick, or overheated. Coaches are watching the heat, but athletes need to listen to their bodies too.
🚧 Suffolk Wants Input on Nearly $21M Bridge Road Widening Project
The News: The City of Suffolk is holding a Design Public Hearing for the Route 17, Bridge Road Widening and Multi-Use Path projects on Thursday, September 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at North Suffolk Library, 2000 Bennetts Creek Park Road. The nearly $21 million project covers Route 17 from about 0.10 mile west of Windward Lane to Harbour View Boulevard. Plans include added travel lanes, replacement traffic signals, a new shared-use path, and new sidewalks.
Why It Matters: This is a major road project for one of North Suffolk’s busiest corridors. If you drive, walk, or bike near Bridge Road and Harbour View, these plans could affect how you move through the area. Construction is not expected until Summer 2029, but design decisions are being shaped now.
👉 The Move: Drop in anytime between 5 and 7 p.m. on September 17 to review plans, ask questions, and share comments. Written comments will be accepted through October 2 by emailing [email protected] or calling 757-514-7673.

The 20th annual Taste of Suffolk Downtown Street Festival is set for Saturday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in historic downtown Suffolk. 🥜 The 48th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest returns this October
The 48th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest returns to Suffolk Executive Airport from October 8 through 11 with country headliner Chris Cagle, a brand-new drone show, a live butterfly walk-through exhibit, and more. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Generations, One Picture Perfect Memory at a Time!” The festival is one of Suffolk’s biggest annual events, and this year’s new drone show and butterfly exhibit give families even more reasons to mark the calendar.
