🏫 Suffolk Schools Need More Space as City Keeps Growing

The News: Suffolk Public Schools opened the new $74.6 million John F. Kennedy Middle School this fall, with room for 800 students, about 200 more than before. But the need for space is still growing. Suffolk has added about 10,000 residents since the 2020 Census and is projected to add another 40,000 by 2050. School enrollment has grown by nearly 600 students in three years, reaching 14,602.

Why It Matters: Superintendent John Gordon said the school division is running out of space. The city has earmarked $494.9 million for school capital improvements over the next 10 years. Next up are plans to replace Elephant’s Fork Elementary and expand Northern Shores Elementary and Nansemond River High School.

👉 The Move: Watch for more talk about a possible 1% sales tax referendum in 2027 to help fund school construction. Suffolk is growing fast, and school space is becoming one of the city’s biggest pressure points.

🏢 Suffolk Apartment Complex Meridian Obici Sells After 8 Years

The News: Castle Lanterra has sold Meridian Obici, a 224-unit apartment community on North Main Street in Suffolk. The company bought the property in 2018 for about $32 million and held it for eight years before selling. The sale price was not disclosed.

Why It Matters: Meridian Obici includes a saltwater pool, fitness center, outdoor kitchens, detached garages, and a dog park. For residents, a change in ownership can sometimes bring changes in management, maintenance, or leasing policies. For Suffolk, the sale shows continued outside interest in the city’s growth.

👉 The Move: If you live at Meridian Obici, watch for updates from the new ownership team about any changes. For everyone else, it is another sign that Suffolk’s housing market continues to draw attention.

🛝 Suffolk Parks Launches Playground Passport Program

The News: Suffolk Parks & Recreation has launched a free Playground Passport program that invites families to explore 17 playgrounds across the city. Passports are available at participating playgrounds and at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building at 134 S. 6th Street.

Why It Matters: It is a simple way to get kids outside, visit different parts of Suffolk, and turn local parks into a little citywide adventure. Families can pick up a passport, visit each playground, and collect stamps along the way.

👉 The Move: Once you visit all 17 playgrounds, return the completed passport to the Administration Building for a Playground Adventurer t-shirt. Participation is free and open to all ages. For more info, call 757-514-7250.
