🏫 A New Era for JFK Middle School

Photo Via: Suffolk VA Public Schools

The new John F. Kennedy Middle School is getting closer, and Suffolk Public Schools says students are expected to move into the new building in Fall 2026. It’s a big milestone for a school with deep roots in the community.

The Big Reveal: Suffolk Public Schools says the new campus is being built to support innovation, collaboration, and student success as the next chapter for JFK begins.

Why It Matters: JFK has been part of Suffolk for decades, and the new building marks a major investment in students, staff, and the future of the school community. The current site’s history goes back to 1965, and the replacement project began in 2023.

👉 The Move: Keep an eye out for more updates as Suffolk gets closer to welcoming students into the new building next fall.

🦅 Eagles and Homes on North Main

A plan to build new homes on North Main Street is getting pushback in Suffolk. One big reason is a bald eagle nest on the property. Ryan Homes wants to build the Riversbend community at 1700 N. Main St., and City Council is set to discuss the rezoning on Wednesday, April 15.

The Big Reveal: The builder wants to change the land from commercial use to residential use so homes can be built there. But some residents want the land protected instead.

Why It Matters: Bald eagles are protected birds, and many people in Suffolk say the site matters because of the nest, the open space, and the history tied to the property. WTKR also reported that there has been strong public opposition to the project.

👉 The Vote: Suffolk City Council is scheduled to take up the Riversbend rezoning at its April 15, 2026 meeting.

💧 Water Maintenance on Holland Road

If you live or work along the Route 58/Holland Road corridor, you may notice lower water pressure over the next couple of days.

The Big Reveal: The Suffolk Department of Public Utilities is doing scheduled maintenance on a water tank in the 5500 block of Holland Road. The work starts Tuesday, April 14, at 5:00 a.m. and is expected to wrap up by Wednesday, April 15, at 11:00 p.m.

Why It Matters: The city says people in the area may notice changes in water pressure during the work.

They’re hosting an anniversary event at their spot on East Washington Street with BOGO gourmet burgers, free gifts, and a full-on burger-eating contest.

The defending champ is coming back to protect the title, and the stakes are real this year. The winner walks away with free burgers for all of 2026 plus a trophy.

🏆 Suffolk Sports Wrap-Up

Week of April 5 – April 11

⚾ GAME OF THE WEEK

Lakeland vs. Bayside (Baseball)
This one was all defense. Lakeland dropped a tough 1-0 game in a straight-up pitcher’s duel. Not much offense, but the Cavaliers showed they can hang in tight games. That kind of performance usually pays off later in the season.

🔥 HIGH SCHOOL RECAP

Nansemond-Suffolk Academy (NSA)

  • JV Girls Soccer: 12-0 shutout… yeah, dominant.

  • 🥍 Boys Lacrosse: 18-1 win over Norfolk Christian. No drama there.

  • 🥎 JV Softball: 16-3 win over Broadwater. Bats stayed hot.

  • Junior Orange Baseball: Wild 10-9 comeback over Cape Henry. Probably the most fun game of the week.

Nansemond River vs. King’s Fork

👀 Rivalry Watch
Both teams used last week to reset and get reps in. Now it’s go time.

👉 Thursday = showdown.
This one’s got real bragging rights energy.
