The Suffolk IQ

Today’s Nutty Truth: In 1941, what title was officially bestowed upon the City of Suffolk?
(Answer at the bottom of the newsletter)

🏍️ Suffolk Drivers, Look Twice

With warmer weather here, more motorcycles are back on Suffolk roads.

The News: Virginia DMV has launched a new safety campaign, “See the Human Under the Helmet,” to remind drivers that riders are our neighbors, not just traffic.

Why It Matters: From Route 58 and Godwin Boulevard to Suffolk’s backroads, motorcycles can be easy to miss. One extra look can save a life.

What You Can Do: Check twice before turning or changing lanes, and give riders extra space.

👉 The Move: Next time you see a motorcycle in Suffolk, slow down and look twice.

🦟Free Mosquito Dunks Available

Suffolk is giving away free mosquito dunks this season, and your backyard will thank you.

What They Are: Mosquito dunks are small tablets you drop into standing water, like birdbaths, gutters, or rain barrels, to stop mosquito larvae before they ever get a chance to bite.

Who Can Grab Some: Any Suffolk resident 18 and older with a valid photo ID and proof of residency.

Why It Matters: Fewer mosquitoes means more comfortable evenings outside, and better protection for the whole household, pets included. Mosquitoes can spread heartworm to dogs and cats and EEE to horses.

👉 The Move: Pick them up at any Suffolk fire station, City Hall, a recreation center, a library, the Visitors Center, or the Mosquito Control Office at 800 Carolina Road. Questions? Call 757-514-7609.

🔥 A Quarter-Century of Service

Photo Via Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue

The City of Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue gathered on April 2 to celebrate a major milestone: the retirement of SFF Tracy Bourn.

The Honor: Bourn is hanging up the helmet after 25 years of dedicated service, a career defined by unwavering commitment to the safety of our community.

Why It Matters: Two and a half decades of fire and rescue service represents thousands of calls answered and a lifetime of being there for Suffolk residents on their toughest days.

The Big Picture: Senior members like Bourn leave behind a legacy of mentorship and experience that has helped shape the department into what it is today.

👉 The Move: Join the City in thanking SFF Tracy Bourn for his quarter-century of service and wishing him the very best in his well-earned retirement!
