Good morning, Scoopers!

King’s Fork’s Mighty Marching Bulldogs showed up at the Trucker Classic and basically said, “We’ll take the trophies, thank you.” 😄

The band earned multiple first place awards, including AAA Dance, Flag, DrumLine, Music & General Effect, and Overall Band, then topped it all off as Grand Champion, the highest scoring band at the entire event.

Big congratulations to the students and directors. Suffolk was definitely heard loud and clear! 🎺🔥

🚒 The Hidden Cost of Answering the Call

The News: Suffolk Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2801 and the Jeff T. Messinger Fund are bringing PTSD 911, a free documentary about the mental health toll on first responders, to Hampton Roads on Saturday, Oct. 24 at Virginia Peninsula Community College in Williamsburg. Screenings are at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Why It Matters: First responders can face repeated traumatic events throughout their careers, increasing the risk of PTSD and other mental health struggles. Suffolk Fire & Rescue also has a Peer Support Team made up of trained members who understand the job firsthand.

👉 The Move: Admission is free, but seats should be reserved in advance. Bring your crew, your family, or someone who understands what comes home after a difficult shift. If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 anytime.

🏫 Suffolk Schools Are Getting a $15 Million Construction Boost

The News: Virginia is awarding Suffolk $15 million through its School Construction Assistance Program. The money will help fund an addition at Northern Shores Elementary and cover about one fifth of the cost to replace Elephant’s Fork Elementary by 2029.

Why It Matters: Suffolk’s growing student population has put pressure on older and crowded schools. This funding gives the city a major boost toward expanding and replacing two campuses.

👉 The Move: Keep an eye on the Northern Shores expansion and Elephant’s Fork replacement as both projects move forward.
