Sgt. Cabell, Sgt. Heyward, Chief Animal Control Officer Lanier, and Sgt. Nesbitt have graduated from the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy’s Leadership Institute, held in partnership with Christopher Newport University.

That is a strong group of leaders continuing to grow, serve, and help keep Suffolk in good hands. Congratulations to them all!

The News: Fabric Shoppe and Embroidery & Print House, a family and veteran-owned Suffolk business, have moved from their longtime home at 5501 Bennetts Pasture Road to a new location at 3575 Bridge Road, Unit 12. The community celebrated the move with a ribbon cutting on August 6.

Why It Matters: Owners Marshall and Pam Miller are longtime locals in the Bennetts Creek area. Pam has lived in Suffolk for more than 40 years and has worked in embroidery and screen printing since 1999. Marshall retired from the U.S. Coast Guard after 35 years of service. Together, they have built a local business serving quilters, crafters, schools, churches, businesses, and community groups across Suffolk.

👉 The Move: Stop by their new location at 3575 Bridge Road, Unit 12. Hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Support a veteran-owned Suffolk business that has been serving the community for more than 25 years.

The News: Shoulders Hill Road will close at the railroad crossing south of Dutchess Way beginning Monday, August 10 at 7 a.m. through Wednesday, August 12 at 5 p.m. Crews are making emergency repairs on behalf of Commonwealth Railway.

Why It Matters: Both northbound and southbound traffic will be blocked at the crossing. If Shoulders Hill Road is part of your daily drive, now is the time to plan another route.

👉 The Move: Follow posted detour signs to I-664 or Bennetts Pasture Road. Give yourself extra time Monday through Wednesday.

The News: The Suffolk Public Works Department has released its Fourth Quarter Report covering April through June 2026. Highlights include nearly 1,900 pass miles of roadside vegetation management, more than 30 miles of ditches cleaned, progress on the Shoulders Hill/Bridge Road intersection and Nansemond Parkway Bridge, two new Suffolk Transit regional routes, and prep work for the new SPSA SORT single-bin recycling program.

Why It Matters: This is your tax dollars at work, Suffolk. Roads, drainage, bridges, transit, and trash collection all affect daily life, and this report gives residents a quick look at what the city has been working on.

Suffolk Parks & Recreation’s TGIF Summer Concert Series kicks off Friday, June 12 at Downtown Festival Park, 215 W. Washington St.

The 48th Annual Suffolk Peanut Fest returns to Suffolk Executive Airport from October 8 through 11 with country headliner Chris Cagle, a brand-new drone show, a live butterfly walk-through exhibit, and more. This year’s theme is “Celebrating Generations, One Picture Perfect Memory at a Time!” The festival is one of Suffolk’s biggest annual events, and this year’s new drone show and butterfly exhibit give families even more reasons to mark the calendar.
