Good morning, Scoopers!
Got a little garden space left? July is not too late to plant. 🥒🥕
You can still direct sow things like beans, carrots, cucumbers, okra, southern peas, squash, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, and watermelon, depending on your growing zone.
So if your garden has a few empty spots, don’t call it quits yet. There’s still time to grow something good this summer!🥒🥕

🌿Virginia’s Marijuana and Hemp Laws Are Changing

The News: Virginia plans to allow legal recreational marijuana sales starting July 1, 2027. For now, adults 21 and older can have up to one ounce and grow up to four plants at home, but there are still no legal recreational stores open.
Why It Matters: Starting August 15, 2026, many hemp products with more than 2mg of total THC per package can no longer be sold as regular hemp products. The state can also take action against unlicensed cannabis and hemp businesses, including warnings, cease and desist orders, and fines.
👉 The Move: Know the law before you buy. Possession and home growing are allowed within limits, but legal retail sales do not begin until 2027.
🚨Suffolk Police Investigating Fatal Crash on Respass Beach Road

The News: Suffolk Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 6800 block of Respass Beach Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver was airlifted to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Why It Matters: The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The road was closed for about three hours but has since reopened. Police are withholding the passenger’s identity until family has been notified.
👉 The Move: Anyone with information should contact Suffolk Police at 757-923-2350 or the Suffolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP, option 5. Our thoughts are with the families involved.
🚧 Turlington Road Closes July 10 for Bridge Work

The News: Turlington Road will close as early as July 10, 2026 for the Speights Spillway Bridge Replacement Project. Crews will replace the bridge deck over the spillway between Lake Speight and Lake Kilby, make structural repairs, and install new guardrails.
Why It Matters: This will be a long closure. The road is not expected to reopen until spring 2027, so drivers who use Turlington Road regularly will need a new route.
👉 The Move: Plan ahead, use an alternate route, and allow extra travel time starting July 10. Thanks for your patience, Suffolk!
