Good morning, Scoopers!
A couple of familiar faces are stepping into new roles around Suffolk schools.
🐯 Dr. Williams is back at John F. Kennedy Middle School, bringing 24 years of experience in education, including work as a Title I instructional coach, SPS literacy coach, and English teacher.
⚾ Over at Nansemond River High School, Justin Balseca has been named the new varsity baseball coach and is officially joining the Warrior family.
Two schools, two fresh chapters. Welcome back, Dr. Williams, and congratulations, Coach Balseca! 🎉

💧 Why Suffolk Is Asking Residents to Cut Back on Water

The News: Reservoirs in the Suffolk area that help supply drinking water to Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and parts of Suffolk are about 7.5 feet below normal. Rainfall is also running roughly 17 inches below normal over the past year.
Why It Matters: Low water levels have already closed boat ramps at Western Branch Reservoir and Lake Burnt Mills, and officials say conditions could lead to tougher water restrictions if they do not improve.
👉 The Move: Residents are being asked to voluntarily cut back on nonessential water use now to help stretch supplies.
🌲 Suffolk Just Protected a Huge Piece of Its Wild Side

The News: Virginia has added 1,916 acres in Suffolk to the South Quay Sandhills Natural Area Preserve, bringing the preserve to 5,668 acres. The new land includes wetlands and one of the region’s largest blocks of connected forest.
Why It Matters: The property creates an important wildlife connection toward the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge while helping protect water quality and habitat for rare plants and animals. It also opens the door for future longleaf pine restoration.
👉 The Move: Nearly 2,000 more acres of Suffolk’s natural landscape are now permanently protected. That’s a pretty big win for the city’s wild side.
🏈 Somebody’s Perfect Record Ends Friday Night

The News: Nansemond River puts its 4-0 record on the line Friday against 5-0 Indian River in one of the biggest Southeastern District matchups of the season. The Warriors are coming off a comeback win over Great Bridge, while Indian River has already knocked off Oscar Smith.
Why It Matters: Both teams are unbeaten, and the game could have major implications for the district and regional standings. It’s also a matchup the teams have dubbed the “Battle of the Rivers.”
👉 The Move: Kickoff is Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 PM at Nansemond River High School in Suffolk. Somebody’s perfect start is getting a serious test.
