🎨 Why Suffolk’s Arts Leader Just Earned a Regional Honor

The News: Dr. Joleen Neighbours, Suffolk Public Schools’ Coordinator of Fine and Performing Arts, has been named Tidewater Region Art Administrator of the Year by the National Art Education Association and Virginia Art Education Association.

Why It Matters: The honor recognizes her work supporting art educators and expanding opportunities for Suffolk students across the division.

👉 The Move: Congratulations, Dr. Neighbours! Another strong recognition for the people helping Suffolk students create, perform, and grow.

🦷 How a Suffolk Dentist Rose to a Statewide Leadership Role

The News: Suffolk dentist Dr. Dani Howell has been installed as President-Elect of the Virginia Dental Association. A third-generation Suffolk dentist, she practices at Ralph L. Howell Jr., DDS & Associates and earned her DDS from VCU School of Dentistry in 2017.

Why It Matters: Dr. Howell has already led at the regional level as a former president of the Tidewater Dental Association. Now she is stepping into a leadership role representing dentists across Virginia.

👉 The Move: Congratulations, Dr. Howell! Another Suffolk professional making a mark well beyond the city.

🎨 Peanut Fest Added a New Art Tradition This Year

The Peanut Fest Chalk Art Competition named its 2026 winners:

🥇 Gordon Jones and Laura Schmidt
🥈 Ja’Lisa Yates
🥉 Hannah Arnold and Jenna Nicolsky
🏅 Honorable Mentions: Kaitlyn Merrell and Samantha Davis

And this year brought something new: the first City of Suffolk Employees’ Pop-Up Art Exhibit.

🎨 Viewer’s Choice Winner: Robert Rhodes for “Waterman on the Nansemond River”

A nice new twist for Peanut Fest, and a cool way to spotlight the creative side of Suffolk’s own city employees.
